ABOUT THE BOOK

Family traditions and individuality blend in a delightful tale of a spirited little girl determined to create her own qípáo, a traditional Chinese dress, for the Lunar New Year in Sylvia Chen’s new picture book, SPARKLES FOR SUNNY.

As the Lunar New Year approaches, Sunny is tired of wearing her sister’s hand-me-downs to the party. She is determined to showcase her own unique personality in her dress. However, the Lao family has four rules: make what you can yourself, get good deals, share extra materials with others, and never waste anything. Just once, Sunny wants to wear something that reflects her rather than her sisters. So, she sets out to gather different fabrics to create a beautiful qípáo that honors the Lao Family Way without dimming her own personality.

Sylvia Chen has crafted a heart-warming tale about featuring an inspirational and creative girl character who is destined to join the ranks of other beloved girl characters like Olivia the PigFancy Nancy, and Busy BettySPARKLES FOR SUNNY is perfectly timed for Lunar New Year celebrations and roundups and is an excellent choice for classrooms, offering a gentle, kid-friendly message about resourcefulness and the beauty of upcycling.
